Search and Destroy with Jennie Lee

Jennie gave a terrific talk on how to identify and control some of the more common bugs that she has encountered in her 10 years of gardening in northeast Lafayette County.
Here is a handy chart to help you idenfity the bugs and how best to get rid of them and some other helpful pointers including a recipe for homemade insecticidal soap.

She recommends the following books : The Gardener's Bug Book, (with color photos) and  Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Insect and Disease Control. Her favorite informative organization is  ATTRA.NCAT.org.  (National sustainable agriculture information service). They have a fascinating website that is aimed at commercial producers, but anyone can download the many publications on the site, including several on pest and disease management.

Also on the subject of books, Barry Whitehouse from the Master Gardeners recommends The Truth About Organic Gardening, which he says considers pros and cons of both organic and conventional methods, but is generally pro-organic and full of practical advice.
